Theatre Royal (Dunlop Street)
From Glasgow
Situated on Dunlop Street.
Regarded as Glasgow's first purpose built cinema, designed by John Jackson and opened in January 1782.
The theatre was burnt down in 1863, rebuilt and then finally demolished in 1869 to make way for the St. Enoch Train Station. The title was transferred to the Theatre Royal (Hope Street).
Was built after fire destroyed the Queen Street Theatre.
In 1849 a false fire alarm led to 70 people being trampled to death in the ensuing panic. There is a monument to them erected in the Necropolis.
