History

Originally a church in 1529. Since then it has been (beside a place of worship, both catholic and protestant), a place of execution, a meeting hall, a market, a store house and a police station.

The oldest suriving part of the building is the 16th century clock tower.

It was reconstructed following the great fire of 1577 and in 1793 the Hell Fire Club set the building on fire again, destroying it save for the steeple.

In 1800 it was home to the first Glasgow police force. In 1821 it was the first steeple clock in Britain to be illuminated with gas reflectors.

After a period of disuse the building was taken over by the Glasgow Theatre Club in 1980 (at a rent of £1 per annum). In 1982 the main auditorium was opened.

The theatre, as a club, was only open to members until 1990 with the opening of the Victorian Bar & Restaurant.
