Opened by Lady Weir at 2:30pm on Wednesday November 13th 1929, it was the ABC's Glasgow flagship cinema. Designed by CJ McNair.

This 2,359 seat cinema was an extension and conversion of a much older bulding which had previously housed Hengler's Circus, The Ice Palace and the Hippodrome.

The building was also the site of Glasgow's first public film showing on May 26th 1896. This was recently commemorated by a plaque presented by the British Film Institute.

In 1967 the building was renamed the ABC1 at the same time a large extension housing a second screen was erected alongside, named the ABC2 known collectively as the ABC Film Centre.
