Construction began on the St. Enoch Shopping Centre in 1985 on the grounds of what was previously The St. Enoch Station Hotel. It was opened to the public in May 1989.
The glass roof, surrounding a seven storey car park, and when originally open, an ice rink, is the largest of its kind in Europe. It also features Scotland's largest food court.
The ice rink was closed late in 1998 to make more space available for retail outlets.
In 1996 the centre was sold by the owners, Church Commissioners and Sears Properties Limited to a German pension fund, Deka Immobillien, for £160 million.
In early 1998, the St. Enoch Centre underwent a major refurbishment, adding 55,000 square feet of retail space and enhancing the entrance facing onto Argyle Street.
In February 2005 the centre once again changed ownership and is now jointly owned by The Mills Corporation and Ivanhoe Cambridge.
