Donald Dewar Statue
From Glasgow
Created by Kenny MacKay, erected in 2002 and unveiled by Tony Blair in memory of the former First Minister, Donald Dewar and in keeping with his famous unkempt appearance, it showed Dewar standing, stooped, wearing a slightly crushed jacket.
It is situated outside the Royal Concert Hall at the junction of Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street.
On the base of the statue is inscribed the opening words of the Scotland Act: There Shall Be A Scottish Parliament.
Within days of it's appearance it suffered minor damage. This was originally thought to be vandalism but under further scrutiny of CCTV footage was deemed by the police to have occured accidentally after attempts to place a traffic cone on the head of the statue.
It remained in a slightly damaged condition until October 2005 when it was removed for repairs and cleaning. It was reinstated in December 2005 and mounted on a much taller polished red sandstone plinth in the hope of dettering vandals.
