Argyle Street runs west to east, merging from Dumbarton Road near Glasgow University, running alongside Kelvingrove Park passing under the M8 Motorway. It continues to run, one way, parallel between the River Clyde and St. Vincent Street until it reaches Trongate and becomes part of London Road.

History of the name

Originally named St. Enoch's Gate or alternatively St. Thenew's Gait as it lead to a chapel dedicated to St. Enoch, the mother of St. Mungo, the patron saint of Glasgow. In the 12th century the road was renamed Dumbarton Road as it lead to Dumbarton Castle. In the following years the name changed to Wester Gate and ,just prior to assuming it's current name, was called Anderston Walk. Sometime between 1751 and 1760 it was finally renamed Argyle Street in honour of the 3rd Duke of Argyll.
