Officially opened in 1870 by its namesake Princess Alexandra, the wife of future King Edward VII. The park is bordered to the north by the M8 Motorway, to the east by Provan Road, to the south by Cumbernauld Road and it situated on Sannox Gardens just to its west.
The City Improvement Trustees purchased the park in 1866 from Walter Stewart of Haghill. It was originally a baren area extending from the Monkland Canal to Cumbernauld Road known as Wester Kenny-hill.
The 40 foot cast-iron Walter MacFarlane Saracen Fountain was gifted to the City after the 1901 International Exhibition and remained in Kelvingrove Park for 12 years after the exhibition. In 1914 Glasgow Corporation took the decision to re-site this magnificent piece of industrial architecture to its present location. In 2000 the fountain was restored to its former glory at a cost of £22,000.
